This is why Beauty is the ultimate metric as it supports and sustains all life. Leading economists, respected business institutes, argue for a fundamental redesign of business, its purpose, and governance, if we wish to thrive now and into the future. There is growing evidence that restorative businesses are more resilient and financially successful. Beautiful Businesses are purpose and values led. Then there is Design which is not incidental to modern economies it is integral.

Because everything man-made is designed; culture, products, services, code, farming, architecture, materials, you name it, the chair you are sitting upon, or the back lit screen you are reading this on. Everyday we have the opportunity to make everything meaningful, valuable, useful qualities that lift up our humanity. Design of outstanding products and services delivering customer satisfaction results in sustained financial performance. The time of thoughtless design for thoughtless consumption is at an end. Beautiful Businesses create workplace cultures that nurture each and every individual, that make products and services that people love.

Positive experiences generate deeper engagement, community and trust. We can only be our most productive when we feel our best. One does not need a survey to make the point of its obvious truth. I had hoped to find some insightful tidbits that I could cull from the variety of experiences documented here to help serve as a guide for how one might strive toward beauty in their own team environment.

Unfortunately, several times along the way, I got bored with the varied writing styles and was never able to locate those hidden heuristics I had hoped to find.

Like other books in this series, some chapters are in the form of interviews, while others are pieces written by various people in our industry. I found the interviews to be much more interesting, although the editors spend a fair amount of time talking about themselves which usually seemed to distract rather than add value. Some of the pieces written by those in the industry lacked any direction or focus and read more like long-winded diary entries than poignant stories about the teams they were on.

There were some fun moments along the way, but the burden of reading these pages was heavier than its heft alone.

Format: Paperback. Beautiful Teams is a wonderful collection of stories by great names in software about their experiences with teams. And even a few non-software folks who make the stories that much more compelling because they transcend discipline. The book is broken into 4 main sections - one each for the primary themes that come up when talking about beautiful teams: People, Goals, Practices, and Obstacles.

They are misfits. I don't know that there's the answer to how to build a beautiful team in here, it is more a book of tales. But it is definitely a topic we will do well to be thinking more about in software development and a fun book to read. And, again, I love Scott Berkun's advice, "Stop complaining about your coworkers.
