The Beautiful Years I
A little other woman drama, completely safe! Great epilogues. I loved Jenna and Jakes story. I really enjoyed the secondary story of the mom and Drake! Jun 12, lily waheed rated it really liked it.
That was HOT and cute at the same time, loved it. Jun 07, Liv rated it it was amazing. Loveeeeeddddd it! Steele always writes some of the best romance books out there and this was definitely a 5 out of 5 for me! I really liked his mom and brother , and also the use of J names for the characters. Can't wait for the next release from one of my favorite authors! Jun 09, Ruby Ap. Recommended to Ruby by: Been reading author's work since the beginning :. I absolutely loved this read! Jake and Jenna, where to begin with the love I have for their story! I loved how devoted Jake was to his job, no time for woman until Jenna catches his eye from the window. Jenna is down on her luck, Jake is her chance at a better life. They have brilliant chemistry, it's hot and sweet. I loved every moment of this novella. Jun 16, Lindsey rated it it was ok. I mean totally real life here! While the storyline was a bit over the top the thing that really bugged me was the halting dialogue. I lost track of the plot at least twice because the dialogue would just be all over the place and not matching the action in the book. Jun 07, Lisa Book Shelf rated it really liked it.
Buying love Can you buy love? Yes you can if you find your Angel in Vegas and take her away for a happy ever after. Instant love at the best. Jun 09, Leslee rated it really liked it. Jenna feels like her life is going nowhere. Stuck in a crappy apartment and dead end job in Vegas, she feels hopeless. The one bright spot in her day was seeing a gorgeous guy in a limo on her way to work. When said gorgeous guy walks up to her at the event she is waitressing at and asked her to marry him.
She figures she doesn't have much to lose. Jake spotted Jenna and he wanted to have her any way he could get her. It might have been a bad idea to make it like a business transaction. Will she Jenna feels like her life is going nowhere. Will she be able to see that it is love not sex he is buying? I liked Buying Love, love the down on their luck heroines who are rescued by a rich guy trope.
I would have liked more from Jake's point of view in terms of his feelings for Jenna. You got tiny little glimpses but it was completely understandable why he was closed off at first. Where this book really shines is taking us into Jenna's thoughts and emotions. She tries to be pragmatic and all but she is really attracted to him. When she feels hurt, you can't help but feel it. Fast but still heartfelt, these two are a true match! Jun 10, Mary Murphy rated it really liked it Shelves: arc-list , c-m-steele. Received as an ARC for an honest review. As the two meet and start a friendship it blossoms into somethi This is an amazing beginning to this 7 part series and I have to say that Annie knocked it out the park with this one. As the two meet and start a friendship it blossoms into something so much more and their chemistry is off the chain and they are like a lock and key two sides of a coin and everything else.
As their relationship grows Scarlett is willing to give her all for him. To lay down her life for him and no matter what happens she is going to be there for him. Any author who is that dedicated to their books to write you a warning before you start it, gets me curious. And i truly needed that warning. To be short: I loved it.
To be long: i still loved it, but it put my emotions through the roof. How could he, of all people, betray her like that? If I could, I wouldve pushed myself through those pages and dragged him through Some muddy paths back to her. I felt her the mos The letter of the author in the beginning got me hooked right from the first page. I felt her the most. He is So closed off most of all the times, that I truly respected her patience.
Some will say that the writing style was slow, and normally Im one of those to say it, but in this case it fit the writing style perfectly. It didnt got me bored. Well done Annie! Im looking forward to the next one, and cant Wait until I finish this series. TLDR; just read the damn book! This book was not for me. The author has written a letter to her readers. Please do the courtesy of reading. She tells you a little of the process to writing this saga.
At times, he seemed to be like a puppeteer — moving people about as he moves the strings attached. As I got to know him, I felt as if he held some things close to his chest. Scarlett The author has written a letter to her readers. I felt the same about her. One minute she seems so much older than her chronological year. Scarlett has an interesting friend named Violet. One minute I felt like she was a good friend and the next I was questioning her intentions.
There were things that I could feel as I got to know the characters. On the one hand, there were times where I felt it took a while to understand what was going on. There were times when I became curious about a character. Maggie is one such character. It will be interesting to see how the author goes about weaving her into the story. Stay tuned. I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Always, always, always! That question still haunts me. It's like an eerie feeling you have when something unexpected is coming. Brando Piero Fausti and Scarlett Rose Poesy souls are connected in a way we wouldn't be able to explain really. They have this uncanny ability to sense the other when they are near. Their feelings, thoughts and so forth. It's kind of scary, but also romantic that they are so entwined this way to each other. So in re Always, always, always!
So in reading book1 to this 7 part saga, you will get to learn some of the characters in their story. I'm also wondering how their parts will be told throughout. Since I've mostly gotten Scarlett's version and not much of Brando yet I'm really interested in his side now. I took my time reading this because I've had to reread some of it to get a better understanding. It's so beautifully written. So poetic and its like a hauntingly told tragic love story with more to follow. It's so realistic it makes you feel like your a part of them as your going through this.
And at the end your wondering what is going on and why, how did it come to this. Question after question and now we wait to continue to part 2. I really hope you pick up this book and give it a chance. I know the first book may seem long, but when your learning the characters and where this story is going its worth it. I didn't rush this book. I savored it and reread some of it to grasp the feelings.
But I'm all for Brando and Scarlett. I'm really hoping this series isn't a tragic ending. We shall wait to find out. I really loved the letter from the author in the beginning. Sorry if i didn't mention to much but I didn't want to leave one bit of spoiler. May 16, Sassy Southern rated it really liked it. She is the granddaughter of a famous ballerina and the pressure to continue dancing is immense and Scarlett no longer has the same passion towards it.
But for each of them their family names carry something, a burden, and will they each be able to cope with the pressure and can they make it through together or will they fall apart? This was a long book and had some really interesting twists that will set the groundwork for the following books. I liked Brando and how protective he was over Scarlett. She lost her passion to dance but was being forced to do it again by her mom whereas she really just wanted to teach.
The stuff with Violet and Mitch and Mick was almost strange considering kids were involved but nothing seemed to be resolved between them in this book so I assume more is coming. I was mad at Brando near the end which pushed Scarlett towards Travis and Ace and the very end washeartbreaking. By Rebecca Holy cow!! I am not even sure where to start!
This is book one of a seven part saga and if the first book is any indication of the kind of ride the reader will be taken on, fasten your seat belts! Be sure to read the author's letter to the reader in the beginning! Scarlett and Brando have a connection one night outside of her dance studio in the snow I really loved them all. And this Holy cow!! And this author writes so beautifully! This isn't the first book of hers I have read. I loved her previous books, but she hits it out of the ballpark with this storyline! The story is told through both Scarlett's and Brando's voice, but his chapters are few, so he remains a bit of a mystery to both the reader and Scarlett.
The land felt more bayou than farm, which meant that lazy oaks rustled in the wind, swaying to and fro, in the loving embrace of the sun. The Spanish moss that somehow weaved itself around their long branches floated, going whichever way the tempest directed, but still holding tight to the anchor of their existence.
The rest of the property was filled with pine trees, long, thin things that perfumed the air with their heady scent and littered the ground with their needles. It takes two to possess. Without his surrender, without mine, there would be no magician and no spell. He kissed my forehead. I highly recommend! I can't wait for their story to continue. This is the first book of Welch's I have read and it most certainly won't be my last!

Welch's writing is like poetry in motion. I just can't get enough of it. Well, that is a small fib. I have to wait until November to find out what happens next!! Typically I wouldn't read the first book until the last book is out, but I agreed to read this book for an honest review. My husband says that it gives me something to loo This is the first book of Welch's I have read and it most certainly won't be my last!
My husband says that it gives me something to look forward to. As a reader, you want that next book ready and waiting for you to finish the last page in the first book so you can devour the second book right away. Patience is not my thing LOL. I just loved, loved, loved this book. Brando is the man that every woman wants and every man wants to be. Brando is the man that every woman prays to God that her boyfriend treats them as well as he treats Scarlett. Brando has not had an easy life, but he is the man he is for the hardships he has endured.
His love runs deep. Scarlett is a world-class ballerina. She is the granddaughter of the worlds greatest ballerina, so it runs in her blood. Scarlett meets Brando outside the dance studio on a fated night. You can feel the love bloom through the pages. Both their fates were sealed on that night. She can feel him before she sees him. He is always in the shadows keeping watch over her.
I really want to tell you more, but I will spoil everything. This is the first book in a long time that has grabbed me by the heart and refused to let it go. Mar 31, Rachel rated it did not like it. The government gradually became extremely corrupt on all levels, leading to widespread deterioration of the Han Empire. The rebellion was barely suppressed by imperial forces led by the general He Jin. Upon Emperor Ling's death, He Jin installed the young Emperor Shao on the throne and took control of the central government.
The Ten Attendants , a group of influential court eunuchs, feared that He Jin was growing too powerful, so they lured him into the palace and assassinated him. In revenge, He Jin's supporters broke into the palace and indiscriminately slaughtered any person who looked like a eunuch. In the ensuing chaos, Emperor Shao and his younger half-brother, the Prince of Chenliu , disappeared from the palace. The missing emperor and the prince were found by soldiers of the warlord Dong Zhuo , who seized control of the imperial capital, Luoyang , under the pretext of protecting the emperor.
Dong Zhuo later deposed Emperor Shao and replaced him with the Prince of Chenliu Emperor Xian , who was merely a figurehead under his control. Dong Zhuo monopolised state power, persecuted his political opponents and oppressed the common people for his personal gain. Cao Cao escaped from Luoyang, returned to his hometown and sent out a fake imperial edict to various regional officials and warlords, calling them to rise up against Dong Zhuo.
Under Yuan Shao 's leadership, 18 warlords formed a coalition army and launched a punitive campaign against Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo felt threatened after losing the battles of Sishui Pass and Hulao Pass , so he evacuated Luoyang and moved the imperial capital to Chang'an. He forced Luoyang's residents to move together with him and had the city set aflame. The coalition eventually broke up due to poor leadership and conflicting interests among its members. In the meantime, the Han Empire was already disintegrating into civil war as warlords fought for territories and power. Sun Jian found the Imperial Seal in the ruins of Luoyang and secretly kept it for himself.
Others such as Cao Cao and Liu Bei , who initially had no titles or land, were also gradually forming their own armies and taking control of territories. During those times of upheaval, Cao Cao saved Emperor Xian from the remnants of Dong Zhuo's forces, established the new imperial capital in Xu and became the new head of the central government. Through his conquests, Cao Cao united central and northern China under his control. The territories he conquered served as the foundation of the state of Cao Wei in the future. His eldest son, Sun Ce , delivered the Imperial Seal as a tribute to the rising pretender , Yuan Shu , in exchange for reinforcements.
Sun Ce secured himself a state in the rich riverlands of Jiangdong Wu , on which the state of Eastern Wu was founded later. Tragically, Sun Ce also died at the pinnacle of his career from illness under stress of his terrifying encounter with the ghost of Yu Ji , a venerable magician whom he had falsely accused of heresy and executed in jealousy.
However, Sun Quan , his younger brother and successor, proved to be a capable and charismatic ruler. With assistance from Zhou Yu , Zhang Zhao and others, Sun Quan inspired hidden talents such as Lu Su to serve him, built up his military forces and maintained stability in Jiangdong.
However, their ambitions were not realised as they did not receive due recognition for helping to suppress the Yellow Turban Rebellion and participating in the campaign against Dong Zhuo. When Cao Cao showed signs that he wanted to usurp the throne, Emperor Xian wrote a secret decree in blood to his father-in-law, Dong Cheng , and ordered him to get rid of Cao. However, the plot was leaked out and Cao Cao had Dong Cheng and the others arrested and executed along with their families.
Liu Bei had already left the imperial capital when the plot was exposed. He retreated south to Jing Province , where he found shelter under the governor, Liu Biao. He collaborated with Liu Bei on this effort, but Cao Cao soon found out about the plot and had Dong Cheng and his conspirators executed, with only Liu Bei surviving and fleeing to join Yuan Shao in the north. After settling the nearby provinces, including a rebellion led by former Yellow Turbans, and internal affairs with the court, Cao Cao turned his attention north to Yuan Shao, who himself had eliminated his northern rival Gongsun Zan that same year.
Yuan Shao, himself of higher nobility than Cao Cao, amassed a large army and camped along the northern bank of the Yellow River. In the summer of , after months of preparations, the armies of Cao Cao and Yuan Shao clashed at the Battle of Guandu near present-day Kaifeng. Cao Cao's army was heavily outnumbered by Yuan Shao. Due to a raid in Yuan's supply train, Yuan's army fell into disorder as they fled back north. Cao Cao took advantage of Yuan Shao's death in , which resulted in division among his sons, and advanced to the north. By the end of , after a victorious campaign beyond the frontier against the Wuhuan culminating in the Battle of White Wolf Mountain, Cao Cao achieved complete dominance of the North China Plain.
He now controlled China's heartland, including Yuan Shao's former territory, and half of the Chinese population. He also built up his forces in preparation for war against Cao Cao. Following his unification of central and northern China under his control, Cao Cao, having been appointed Imperial Chancellor by Emperor Xian, led his forces on a southern campaign to eliminate Liu Bei and Sun Quan. In , Although Liu Bei managed to repel two attacks by Cao Cao at Xinye, he was eventually forced to flee due to the overwhelming strength of the enemy forces.
Cao Cao's forces captured most of the unarmed civilians and Liu Bei's baggage. Together, they sailed down the river to Xiakou. Cao Cao did not follow up in immediate pursuit. The main objective of his drive to the south had been the base at Jiangling County, and he pressed on south to secure that base first. In , After the Battle of Changban. Zhuge Liang remained temporarily in Wu territory to assist Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu felt that Zhuge Liang would become a threat to Sun Quan in the future and attempted to kill him on a few occasions but ultimately failed and ended up having no choice but to cooperate with Zhuge Liang.
Sun Quan, unhappy over having gained nothing, sent messengers to ask Liu Bei to "return" the territories to him, but Liu dismissed the messenger each time with a different excuse. Sun Quan was unwilling to give up, so he followed Zhou Yu's plan to trick Liu Bei to come to his territory and marry his sister, Lady Sun. He would then hold Liu Bei hostage in exchange for Jing Province. However, the plan failed and the newlywed couple returned to Jing Province safely. Zhou Yu later died in frustration after Zhuge Liang repeatedly foiled his plans to take Jing Province.
By then, Liu Bei ruled over a vast stretch of land from Yi Province to southern Jing Province; these territories served as the foundation of the state of Shu Han later. In eastern China, Sun Quan and Cao Cao's forces fought in various battles along the Yangtze River , including the battles of Hefei and Ruxu , but neither side managed to gain a significant advantage over the other. Meanwhile, Sun Quan plotted to take Jing Province after growing tired of Liu Bei's repeated refusals to hand over the province.
He secretly made peace and allied with Cao Cao against Liu Bei. With his army's morale falling and the troops gradually deserting, Guan Yu and his remaining men withdrew to Maicheng, where they were surrounded by Sun Quan's forces. In desperation, Guan Yu attempted to break out of the siege but failed and was captured in an ambush.
Sun Quan had him executed after he refused to surrender. His son and successor, Cao Pi , forced Emperor Xian to abdicate the throne to him and established the state of Cao Wei to replace the Han dynasty. About a year later, Liu Bei declared himself emperor and founded the state of Shu Han as a continuation of the Han dynasty. Liu Bei's subjects urged him to accept Sun Quan's offer but Liu insisted on avenging his sworn brother. Lu Xun initially pursued Liu Bei while the latter retreated after his defeat, but gave up after getting trapped inside and barely escaping from Zhuge Liang's Stone Sentinel Maze.
Liu Bei died in Baidicheng from illness a few months later. On his deathbed, Liu Bei granted Zhuge Liang permission to take the throne if his son and successor, Liu Shan , proved to be an inept ruler. Zhuge Liang firmly refused and swore to remain faithful to the trust Liu Bei had placed in him. However, Zhuge Liang managed to make the five armies retreat without any bloodshed. Zhuge Liang then personally led a southern campaign against the Nanman, defeated them seven times, and won the allegiance of the Nanman king, Meng Huo. After pacifying the south, Zhuge Liang led the Shu army on five military expeditions to attack Wei as part of his mission to restore the Han dynasty.
